About Us

Who we are

Age Concern Essex is a registered charity, and a company limited by guarantee. We were established in April 1949 as “Essex Old People’s Welfare Committee” in order to set up clubs and social activities for older people to combat loneliness and isolation; the name was changed to Age Concern Essex in the early 1970s, and we became a company limited by guarantee in 2003.

We are an independent charity, but are a federated member of Age Concern. Our area of benefit includes Essex and the unitary authorities of Southend and Thurrock.

The income of Age Concern Essex comes from grants from Essex County Council, Primary Care Trusts, Hospital Trusts, grant making trusts, the Community Fund, other voluntary sector funders, donations, bequests, fundraising and from commission on the sale of insurance and other products by Age Concern Essex (Trading) Limited.

Our aims

• To promote positive attitudes towards older people and ageing

• To influence and develop public policies that affect older people

• To promote effective care for older people

• To encourage independence, choice and opportunity for older people
