AGE DISCRIMINATION

Many older people complain to AGE CONCERN ESSEX that they are discriminated against in many walks of life simply because of their age.

A few examples:

• Most people are forced to retire from work at state pensionable age and sometimes even earlier. This deprives older people of the choice to work.
• Unemployed people over 50 say that their age makes it hard to get a new job.
• Hire car firms often refuse to hire their vehicles to older drivers even when they are insured.
• It can be very difficult for older people to get credit
• The disability benefits system for disabled older people is less generous than for those under 65.
  Older people aren't expected to go out!

There are countless other examples.

If you have been discriminated against because of your age, AGE CONCERN ESSEX would like to hear from you. It is illegal to discriminate against people because of their disability, race or sex; why should this not also apply to their age?
